Local radio advertising is a powerful branding tool. It reaches fine niches of the local community: geographically and culturally targetted as efficiently as local newspapers; whilst being nearly as interactive and as stimulating as television, at a fraction of the cost. Furthermore, due to the sensory focus on acoustics when advertising on the radio, a memorable jingle or catchphrase can often be more effectively broadcast over the radio than via any other media format. Radio advertising is especially effective at subliminal suggestion because listeners are often more relaxed when listening to the radio than when required to read or otherwise look such as with TV and print media.
Radio is often utilised in suppliment of cross-media marketing campaigning. To capitalise on this strategy, it's a good idea to maintain a slogan or catchphrase throughout all media formats, but it's also important to create variety between media platforms. For example: a visuo-acoustic television advertisement should utilise sound in a way that doesn't overpower visual effect; whereas an acoustic, non-visual radio advertisement should maximise acoustic impact and thus incorporate different acoustic material to that of its audio-visual counterpart. At the same time, a print advert should use vocabulary that's most likely to be interesting when read by the buyer, while radio and other audio media can control the way words are read and thus can get away with using less easy-to-read vocabulary in order to achieve a more successful effect.
